G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize 2023
The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize 2023 invited proposals for an Installation to help bring to life a very long corridor at The Minos Palace Art Hotel, in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. The artworks will become permanent parts of the collection of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation. The brief was ‘Eudaimonia’.
Martin’s artwork reflected the profound connection between the soul, eudaimonia, happiness and butterflies.
He proposed an artwork that uses the unique yet ever changing viewers’ perspective of a corridor to bring engagement and pause for thought. Stretched over a very significant proportion of the wall length is the sense of a single, large butterfly formed from hundreds of smaller butterflies, seemingly scattered about the same corridor wall, from end to end.
However, this ‘vision’ of the single butterfly is only truly discernible from either end of the corridor through an extreme side-on perspective – as the viewer passes down the corridor the winged shapes seem to evaporate, only to reappear as the viewer might look back over their shoulder.
Martin’s artwork was not selected for a prize.
