There But Not There - The Standing Tommy

The Tommies at the four corners of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, Westminster Abbey, London

“Working with Martin has been a great experience. He understands the need to be practical and pragmatic whilst at the same time making his work as emotionally powerful as possible. Tommy is now working for us at the Royal British Legion Industries on so many levels – helping to raise substantial funds but also providing an enduring symbol of remembrance for the nation.”

Although the Seated Tommies were the original work Martin created to commemorate the fifty local men who died in the Great War, a second, equally powerful, work grew out of that installation. Martin designed the Standing Tommy to act as a single representative image for the entire commemorative work. From a small, local initiative in 2016 it then was taken up nationally and around the Armistice Centenary in November 2018 was projected on major national landmarks around the UK. Royal British Legion Industry’s created table-top 30cm versions for individual purchase and the Tommy now forms part of their logo. (RBLI is entirely separate from RBL)
